In the '80s and '90s, before the dawn of the Internet and social media, movies usually relied on having big artists contributing hit singles in order to bolster word of mouth for the flick.

And while times have changed, and it's somewhat less likely that A-list artists will lend their next hit single to a movie before their next album, yet the role of music in a movie still remains an important one: Films like the EDM-centric We Are Your Friends, Paper Towns and the Rihanna-voiced Home were all bolstered by key musical contributions from major acts, including Kygo, HAIM and Charli XCX.
