Well that didn't last long, did it? With the conclusion of the original 'Bourne' trilogy, director Paul Greengrass said there wasn't really anywhere else for Jason Bourne to go in the franchise, hence the Jeremy Renner spinoff 'The Bourne Legacy.' But it looks like Greengrass and star Matt Damon have come up with an idea to put Jason Bourne back into action.

Deadline reports that Universal has reached a deal for Greengrass to direct a new Bourne film with Matt Damon reprising the role of Jason Bourne for a fourth time. It's not entirely new news, as Latino Review first reported a rumor a few months back that Damon would be returning to the franchise. The film will take the July 16, 2016 slot that was being held for an untitled Bourne film -- which was previously assumed to be marked for the next installment in the 'Bourne Legacy' spinoff series starring Jeremy Renner.

The sequel to 'The Bourne Legacy' is still in play and set to be directed by 'Fast and Furious' franchise director Justin Lin, who was recently rumored to have signed on to direct the first two episodes of 'True Detective' season 2.

As for Greengrass and Damon, shooting a new Bourne film for a 2016 deadline might be a bit of a tight squeeze: just this week, Greengrass signed on to direct 'The Ballad of Richard Jewell' -- the film that reunites 'The Wolf of Wall Street' stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill in the story of Richard Jewell, the famed Atlanta Olympics security guard who discovered a suspicious backpack and removed the crowds from the area, only to later be named as a suspect. Matt Damon is set to star in Ridley Scott's 'The Martian,' which is set for a 2015 release date.
