December around the Twin Ports is the first month of the winter season we're practically guaranteed to see measurable snow and temperatures below the freezing mark for days on end. We've seen plenty of both, but the long string of unseasonably cold temperatures so early in December has people wondering if we've made the record books.
Waterspouts are generally a warm-season phenomenon, appearing over large bodies of water like Lake Superior. Saturday afternoon (December 7), multiple cold air waterspouts were spotted near Knife River, north of Duluth on the Minnesota North Shore.
The multi-day snow storm that spanned December 2, 3, and 4, 2013 packed a serious punch, dropping feet of snow across the Twin Ports region. With parts of Duluth seeing over 2 feet of snow, where does this storm sit in the record books?
Wind, waves, cold, and snow hit the Twin Ports as the first major winter storm of the year passed through. Much of the area saw several feet of snow fall (see snowfall totals) to kick off the long winter season.
The first major snow storm of the season packed a serious punch, with waves of snow through the first week of December leaving Twin Ports and Northland residents digging out. So, how much snow did we get?
While many places in the region have already seen between 1 and 2 feet of snow (see latest snowfall totals here), another heavy round is expected to hit today, leaving a final storm total of between 2 and 3 feet through much of the area before the snow clears out and frigidly cold conditions slide into the area.
