As The Conjuring’s demonically possessed plaything Annabelle gains in popularity, it’s in murder-doll Chucky’s best interest to get back in the public eye and remind us of who’s the real top dog. Maybe Annabelle’s been stronger at the box-office as of late, but put the two toys mano-a-plastic-mano? Not even a fair fight. Chucky’s simply more sadistic; he really and truly hates people and loves killing them. That quality of violence alone sets his tiny head and tiny shoulders above the rest. In case anyone needed a refresher, we now have the Cult of Chucky trailer.

It’s been four years since since Chucky’s lifeless glass-eyed gaze fell upon audiences in Curse of Chucky, and the time is ripe for a comeback. In the latest installment (directed by series writer Don Mancini, who also drew up the script), series survivor Nica (Fiona Dourif) ends up in a mental hospital following the events of Curse. There, she’s assured that her nightmarish ordeal with Chucky was a schizophrenic hallucination caused by stress, and that there’s nothing to be afraid of. To which Don Mancini then tacitly responds, “SIKE!”

Of course the immersion-therapy doll her doctor gives her to prove toys are not evil turns evil, and of course Chucky brings some gloriously corny one-liners along with him. He’s not quite at Freddy Krueger levels, but when it comes to taking all the hot air out of a situation by growling the single most groan-worthy line mid-kill, you can’t do a whole lot better than Chucky. Cult of Chucky hits Blu-ray, DVD and digital video on October 3.
