The Des Moine School District may be drawing a line in the sand to enforce not allowing coaches to make certain players do extra work as punishment during practices.

This would apply to Grade School and High School athletes, being forced to run extra laps etc. being considered a type of corporal punishment which is illegal in the state of Iowa. If you consider the fact that most of these athletes are minors I think that this is a great idea.

You here more and more frequently of athletes passing out at practices or even dying due to heat stroke or some predisposed medical condition. I for one remember having to run extra laps or some type of additional work out from coaches thinking one person on the team was slacking, so we all were punished.

Care needs to be taken in the handling of young athletes, at the end of the day it is just a game. Yes try your best and work out as hard as you can, but some limits do need to be set. For more information on this story click here
