Two feet of snow followed by a frigid cold snap, and winter hasn't even officially started yet (December 21). Considering the weather this month, it is no surprise Duluth makes the list of cities with the most brutal winter weather.

The Farmer's Almanac put together a list of the 5 worst winter weather cities in the United States, using very specific factors to decide what cities made the list. Among the criteria was having a minimum population of 50,000 people, average temperatures, precipitation, wind, and extremes seen over the course of history. Of course, this shuts out cities like Tower, Ely, and Embarass (which might be 1, 2, and 3 on the list otherwise), but Duluth makes the list!

Farmer's Almanac List of 5 Worst Winter Weather Cities in the U.S.

  1. Syracuse, New York
  2. Duluth, Minnesota
  3. Casper, Wyoming
  4. Cleveland, Ohio
  5. Detroit, Michigan

The editors at the Farmer's Almanac offered reasons for each city making the list. Duluth's explanation focused on frigid deep-winter temperatures and plenty of lake-effect snow giving the one-two punch of extreme cold and lots of snow.
