When a director inherits a franchise from another more seasoned, more beloved filmmaker, there’s bound to be some anxiety about whether or not their predecessor will like the finished project. Did I get it right? they ask themselves. Did I do their legacy justice? Gareth Edwards, still pretty new to the blockbuster scene after taking the reins of 2014’s franchise starter/reviver Godzilla, has some galaxy-sized shoes to fill as the director of the upcoming Star Wars anthology film Rogue One. But he doesn’t have to worry too much anymore, because George Lucas has seen the movie, and given it his hearty blessing.

Edwards spoke about Lucas’ reaction to Rogue One at a press conference on Sunday at Lucasfilm’s San Francisco headquarters, per JoBlo:

Two days ago, we got to show George the movie. I got to speak with him yesterday — I don’t want to put words into his mouth, but I can honestly say that I can die happy now. He really liked the movie, so it meant a lot. No offense to anyone here, but it was the most important review to me. You guys are important too, but he’s kind of God. I will take that conversation to my grave. It was a real privilege. His opinion means the world to me.

This is good news for Edwards, and good news for those who agreed with Lucas about how The Force Awakens tried to emulate the original trilogy a little bit too much. Lucas may have lost his way in the fans’ eyes after his badly-received prequels and that Indiana Jones sequel we don’t talk about anymore, but I still maintain that he’s at least a reliable judge of a movie’s quality.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 16.
