Barker's Island is Superior will play host to an exciting extreme sporting event this summer with the inaugural Superior Watercross Shootout, this will mark the first time an International Watercross Association or IWA event will be held in the Twin Ports.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, it is basically racing of modified snowmobiles on water and the Superior Watercross Shootout will include several heats of drag and oval racing throughout the weekend, with the final championship race’s to be held Sunday afternoon.

The weekend of racing will be held on August 17th & 18th and is being organized and promoted by Townsquare Media Duluth, which includes the radio stations and websites of B105, MIX 108, KOOL 101.7 and WEBC 560am, Kimberly Carr, Event Coordinator for Townsquare Media said that, "We are always looking for exciting events to bring to the Twin Ports. Seeing as we have a large number of snowmobile and water sport enthusiasts in this area we thought it would be a perfect fit! Watercross is fast paced and adrenaline filled. We see this as an event that will continue to grow and become a heritage summer activity in the area."

Not only is this an opportunity to grow the sport of watercross, but it's a great opportunity for the city of Superior to add another great signature event for the community, Carr said working with the city "has been amazing...Everyone from the City Council to the Fire and Police Chiefs have been enthusiastic about what we are doing. They are excited about the business this event will bring to their city and are eager to see how it can grow."

"When we first started planning this event we drove all over Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin looking at possible venues. We chose Barker’s Island for many reasons. It is a smaller waterway that can be closed off, it has lots of viewing areas for attendees, and there are lots of choices for entertainment and lodging in the Superior/Duluth area for anyone coming from out of town," said Carr about the decision to go with Barker's Island.

Racing will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 9am until about 5pm. Carr said, "there will also be music, food, vendor booths, and the Keyport Beer Garden. Watercross is an event for all ages so bring the whole family."
