This week in 1999 we remember standing in line to see 'Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace', Furbies and Ricky Martin's biggest hit.

Opening at number one at the box office this weekend was 'Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace'. The fourth installment of the 'Star Wars' franchise was about two jedi's who find allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the force as the Sith are trying to reclaim their old glory. The film was a huge success breaking many box office records and made $100 million in the first five days, it also made over $1 billion at the box office in total.

Furbies came flooding in to the market and made over $14 million in 1999. Even I had a Furby named Gizmo because he looked exactly like Gizmo from the 'Gremlins' movie. Furbies were also the first successful attempt produce and sell a domestically-aimed robot.

The number one song this week was Ricky Martin's hit song 'Livin La Vida Loca' which translates to "the crazy life". The single sold over 8 million copies and was nominated for four Grammy's and won the Hot 100 Singles Male Artist of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards.
