The tornados that dropped from the sky over Illinois on Sunday left homes and businesses scattered in pieces across the landscape, and buried in that rubble was one survivor's scared and injured dog.

Weather Underground blogger/photographer Charles Ledford caught these touching photos of Jon Byler Dann, who lives with his family in Washington, Ill, ground zero for the worst of the tornado damage.

Byler Dann was able to get most of his family in to the basement for safety, but was unable to coax the family dog, Maggie, into the safe area.

When the storm had passed he thought the worst when he emerged from his basement to find his house gone and the dog missing.

But after a few minutes of digging, Maggie was found. She was wet, cold, terrified and had some broken bones, but the 11 year old dog is expected to be fine.
