In the last month the FDA has received over 3000 complaints of illness related to consumption of chicken, duck, and sweet potato jerky treats, nearly all of which are imported from China.

The FDA is looking for help from veterinarians around the country to report to the FDA any cases of treat related illness that come to their attention.

The FDA is warning pet owners to check with their vet when adding treats to your pets diet and that jerky treats are not required for a balanced diet.

What to Look For

Within hours of eating treats some pets have exhibited decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus), increased water consumption, and/or increased urination.

Severe cases have involved kidney failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, and a rare kidney disorder. About 60% of cases involved gastrointestinal illness, and about 30% involved kidney and urinary systems.

The remaining cases reported various symptoms, such as collapse, convulsions or skin issues.

If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms after eating a suspected treat, please see your vet ASAP.
