‘Kanye: The Musical’ Will Celebrate Kanye West’s Life and Legacy (Seriously)

If you liked ‘Watch the Throne,’ then you’ll love ‘Kanye: The Musical.’

The two-man show, put together by Australian actors Phillip Roser and Damien Higginbotham, doesn’t feature any of Kanye West‘s actual music, but does chronicle the life and times of rap’s best-known egocentric — and takes a bit of creative license while doing so. So, sort of like ‘Jersey Boys,’ if they couldn’t get the rights to ‘Sherry’ and ‘Walk Like a Man.’

As the duo behind the show put it, “This is a comedy, it won’t let the truth get in the way and will be a lot of fun.”

Roser, who will play Kanye, calls himself a big fan and added, “I thought that a musical in his honor would be a lot of fun to put on. I really just meant the show to be something fun for my friends to see and I’m pretty excited by all the attention it’s been getting.”

The show features 15 original songs and opens with a number called ‘A Big, Bright, Shining Star,’ in which Kanye’s mom Donda West — voiced by Higginbotham — celebrates her son’s birth. It continues with several highlights of Kanye’s career, including his supposed “victimization” after the incident with Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs, and closes with ‘One Day, They’ll Understand,’ whose lyrics detail Kanye’s feeling that people will eventually see the genius behind his actions.

The play will run September 5- 7 at the University of Sydney’s Cellar Theatre.
