Whispers about a possible Space Jam sequel began circulating online last year, with basketball star LeBron James attached as the film's star, but no notable progress seems to have been made on the project since. But those rumors have gathered steam following recent news that LeBron has entered into a significant entertainment partnership with Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. announced last night (July 22) that it had signed a partnership deal with LeBron's production company, SpringHill Entertainment, that is set to encompass film, television and digital content. Warner Bros. CEO and chairman Kevin Tsujihara said (via NME), "LeBron James has one of the most powerful, well-known brands in the world and we are excited to be in business with him and his partner, Maverick Carter, and SpringHill Entertainment. The combination of LeBron's global media presence and Warner Bros.' unmatched production and distribution expertise is a big win for fans everywhere."

According to NME, Warner Bros. originally planned for LeBron to fill in for Michael Jordan's character in the sequel, which LeBron's reps were quick to deny. LeBron, however, caught wind of the rumors at the time and said, "I've always loved Space Jam. It was one of my favorite movies growing up. If I have the opportunity, it will be great."

There has yet to be any official confirmation that a Space Jam 2 is in the works, but considering the current over-saturation of sequels infiltrating the film and television market, we'd be more shocked if it didn't happen.

In other news, LeBron's performance in the Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck has garnered rave reviews, so if Warner Bros. absolutely must make a Space Jam sequel, we're cautiously optimistic that it won't be terrible.
