“It’s morphin’ time!”

(Repeats ad nauseum until the heat death of the universe.)

There’s a new Power Rangers movie coming out. It is happening. Shooting is already underway, and the characters have those mighty morphin Iron Man costumes pictured above. The movie, directed by Dean Israelite, reboots the Power Rangers gang from the much-beloved ’90s TV series for the big screen, with the Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, and Pink Rangers teaming up to take down Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks, incredibly).

So movie #1 is a given. And it stands to reason that if movie #1 is a hit, Lionsgate might try to make movie #2. But on a conference call earlier today, according to Variety, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said that there could be way, waaaaay more Power Rangers movies in our future:

“We are really, really excited about the ‘Power Rangers’ movie,” Feltheimer said. “We could see doing five or six or seven.”

Lionsgate is in the market for a new tentpole franchise. The Hunger Games is over and done with and the Divergent series is winding down (as something of a financial disappointment). The studio supposedly had Gods of Egypt pegged as a new franchise, but then that came out and, well, it was Gods of Egypt. Power Rangers, which has a built-in fanbase and tons of name recognition, could be the long-term series of their dreams. And if it’s not, it won’t be for lack of trying.

Power Rangers opens in theaters on March 24, 2017. What happens after that is anyone’s guess. But it probably involves more Power Rangers movies.
