Lucasfilm Is Planning the Next 10 Years of ‘Star Wars’ Movies

With the current Star Wars trilogy set to conclude in 2019, some fans have already begun wondering what’s next for the prolific franchise. Lucasfilm has a few spinoffs in the works, including an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie (possibly with Ewan McGregor) and the upcoming Solo (which recently wrapped production), but the future of the core series hasn’t exactly been at the forefront of public discussion — until now.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stopped by The Star Wars Show to discuss everyone’s favorite galaxy far, far away — specifically the studio’s next two releases: The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story. But Kennedy also revealed that Lucasfilm has begun plotting the next decade of films in the franchise:

We’re sitting down now and talking about the next ten years of ‘Star Wars’ stories, and we’re looking at narratively where that might go. Future stories beyond ‘Episode 9’ with these new characters — Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8 — but we’re also looking at working with people who are interested in coming into the ‘Star Wars’ world, and taking us to places we haven’t been yet. And that’s exciting too, because it’s a vast galaxy, far, far away. The possibilities are endless.

(Hopefully those possibilities include finally hiring a woman or person of color to direct a Star Wars movie.)

It’s not exactly the first we’ve heard that Lucasfilm is looking ahead to the future of Star Wars. Back in January 2016, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the studio was already plotting what’s next, though at the time, they (understandably) weren’t thinking too far ahead. (In the same interview, Iger said that, given the vast number of characters, Marvel movies could go on “forever.” So don’t count on seeing an end to the MCU in your lifetime.)

The Last Jedi is hitting theaters on December 15, followed by Solo next May, and Lucasfilm recently lured J.J. Abrams back to direct Episode IX for a 2019 release — even going so far as to push the date back to accommodate Abrams’ schedule. After that? There’s the Obi-Wan movie, which is still in the early stages, with Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) in talks to direct, and then there’s that oft-rumored Boba Fett spinoff that once had Josh Trank attached to helm.

As Kennedy notes, the possibilities are indeed endless, but it might be nice to move away from the Skywalker clan and focus on a new family. Nine films seems like more than enough, don’t you think?
