Melissa McCarthy is set to host of Saturday Night Live this coming weekend in the next-to-last episode of the season — and her timing couldn't be better.

McCarthy's portrayal of the White House press secretary, Sean Spicer (aka Spicey), has been a smash hit ever since Donald Trump got elected president. And with the news that Spicer literally hid in the bushes to avoid having to do his job Tuesday night, we can't imagine a better time opportunity for a Spicey return.

After President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, White House staff -- and Spicer in particular --  had to scramble to come up with an explanation for why. They struggled:

White House press secretary Sean Spicer wrapped up his brief interview with Fox Business from the White House grounds late Tuesday night and then disappeared into the shadows, huddling with his staff behind a tall hedge. To get back to his office, Spicer would have to pass a swarm of reporters wanting to know why President Trump suddenly decided to fire the FBI director.

For more than three hours, Spicer and his staff had been scrambling to answer that question.

It then got even better:

After Spicer spent several minutes hidden in the bushes behind these sets, Janet Montesi, an executive assistant in the press office, emerged and told reporters that Spicer would answer some questions, as long as he was not filmed doing so. Spicer then emerged.

“Just turn the lights off. Turn the lights off,” he ordered. “We'll take care of this. ... Can you just turn that light off?”

The only problem may be that whatever SNL puts together this week, it can't be stranger than what's actually been happening. A week ago, if there had been a skit with McCarthy-as-Spicey hiding in the bushes and insisting reporters turn off the lights or else he wouldn't come out, yeah, that would've been funny -- but in an absurd way, not in a this-could-actually-happen-in-real-life way.

Interesting, though rather scary, times we live in.
