Director Ava DuVernay will take the lead in directing a documentary on the life of Prince which will be produced by Netflix. DuVernay had directed the civil-rights drama Selma, sci-fi epic A Wrinkle in Time, and prison documentary 13th. With the cooperation of Prince's estate she has been given full access to his archives and the film will cover the entire life of Prince and his career.

According to Deadline.com DuVernay said “Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses,” the Oscar-nominated filmmaker told Deadline tonight of the Purple Rain star who died in April 2016. “He was like no other,” DuVernay added of the Oscar winner and eight-time Grammy recipient. “He shattered every preconceived notion, smashed every boundary, shared everything in his heart through his music. The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate.”

Being someone who has been a lifelong fan of Prince I am excited to see this film being done by someone who truly seems to understand him as an artist, and on a personal level as well. This is one documentary that I am truly looking forward to seeing in the future.
