In news that will further drive the point home that our government is doomed, Ben Affleck is considering a run for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.

A source close to the 'Argo' actor revealed the horrifying idea to the Huffington Post.

“Ben has been very active in Democratic Party politics for a long time and has never hid his love of politics. He is a very impressive person, with a great deal of knowledge and passion.”

Apparently the idea took hold when it was announced that Democratic Massachusetts Senator John Kerry may become Secretary of State.

Affleck is currently in Washington, D.C. to testify about conditions in Eastern Congo, but wouldn't comment on his own political aspirations. When Politico fished for a sound bite, Mr. Jennifer Garner replied, “That’s not what I’m here to talk about. I’m here to talk about what role we can play in making the Eastern Congo a better place.”

Though he wouldn't address his own political career, Affleck has openly endorsed Democratic candidates in the past, including President (and Person of the Year) Barack Obama and Mass. Senator-Elect Elizabeth Warren.

Affleck's chatty pal went on to add that if we doubt him, we're dumb.

“Anyone that underestimates Ben’s political ambition is a fool," the source said. "He’s very focused and smart. People once laughed when he said he wanted to be a director, and now they are not laughing. Also, never forget that this guy survived Bennifer -- so anything is possible.”

He may have survived Bennifer -- which is apparently one step away from the Holocaust -- but we barely made it through 'Gigli' without hanging ourselves. We're still not sure we can forgive him for that.
