One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson Insists the Wanted Started Feud
Can’t we all just get along?! Louis Tomlinson of One Direction has come out swinging against fellow British boy band the Wanted for allegedly starting what’s become a pretty bitter rivalry between the two groups.
Fuming to Now magazine (quotes via Digital Spy), Louis has quit downplaying the feud and is now talking about it really plainly. “I want to speak openly about this because it’s quite frustrating,” Tomlinson vented. “I remember when I’d just done my first audition on the ‘X Factor’ and I heard ‘All Time Low’ for the first time,” he said. “I thought it was a great song by a great band. We met them on the show and they were nice.”
Not for long, though — and Louis insists he gave the group the benefit of the doubt, given that the press often create stories from quotes taken out of context. “It changed all of a sudden,” he said. There was one press story where they were bad-mouthing us. I thought maybe that had been twisted. But then there ended up being about ten stories and they’ve been caught on camera doing little things.”
To be fair, Louis himself has been caught on camera doing little things too — he recently pretended to be in the Wanted in a radio takeover show. “I just think, ‘If you want to create that rivalry, then let’s do it,'” he said. “We’re not bothered about the friction or the rivalry. But I’m not going to shy away from it because that isn’t the person I am. I don’t think it’s fair to me or any of the lads.” He then took digs at the bad boy reputations that the Wanted have, saying, “I was going to say something rude then. Or something sexual. But that’s something the Wanted would say.”
Ouch! Max George somewhat echoed Louis’ sentiments (or lack thereof), telling Fabulous magazine (via Digital Spy), “We’re not the best of friends, so it’s not like we are going to go up and start hugging and kissing. And they make little comments in interviews when we’re mentioned,” he added. “But they’re young, and that’s expected, and I laugh at it. If they’re taking it seriously, then maybe that’s just an age thing.”
Jay McGuiness refuted that slightly, adding, “There’s no actual fighting, it’s just the way it goes in the media. I’ve met the boys. They’re not angels, but who is? When we first started it was us versus JLS.”
Last month, 1D member Liam Payne kvetched that the Wanted made their career mostly about One Direction, telling press, “To be honest, we haven’t really got a problem with anyone. We’ve never really said anything about it. We’ve kind of ignored it,” he said, before adding, “But for me, the Wanted have made their career more about us than anything else. They’ve only got themselves to blame.” Cold! “They do their dance music and we’ll do our rock’n’roll kind of thing. They’ve constantly compared us in the press. They rose to the bait, whereas we’ve said they can do what they want.”
So much for the high road, eh? We bet this will make the backstage parties at Jingle Ball very, very interesting.
