Following the departure of Rick Adelman from the head coaching role for the Minnesota Timberwolves at the end of the 2013-2014 season, the team has found difficulty in filling the vacancy.

The turbulent Timberwolves ended their 10th straight season without a playoff appearance and have found themselves struggling with their star power forward, Kevin Love, who is looking for an escape route from Minnesota. Added to that is the need to fill a vacancy at the head coaching position.

Two different anonymous sources with knowledge of the situation have told the Associated Press (via 1500 ESPN) that the team has decided that adding head coaching duties to Flip Saunders's plate was the best course of action to allow the situation to stabilize. Saunders was hired last season as president of basketball operations, and also served as head coach of the team from 1995 to 2005. During his time with the team, he posted 411 wins and helped the team to the only playoff appearances in franchise history.

Following Rick Adelman's retirement, the search to replace him has been difficult; including a well-documented situation with Memphis Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger being courted by the Timberwolves, before being lured back to Memphis with a new deal.

The team has not officially made an announcement about the situation, and the sources cited do not know whether or not Saunders would be a temporary or permanent fixture at coach, but more details are sure to be unveiled Friday at a press event to be held at Target Center.
