While it came a couple weeks after much of the rest of Minnesota, the ability to purchase liquor on Sunday begins this weekend in Duluth. Earlier this year, the Minnesota Legislature approved a measure to allow the sale of liquor on Sunday, ending the long-standing prohibition of sales on Sunday. The statewide measure allows for liquor sales to occur starting July 2 from 11 am to 6 pm on Sundays, so long as local governments allow it.

That's where the time discrepancy between the beginning of the month and this weekend comes in. Local cities and municipalities had to act to allow sales locally on the measure, which opened the door to a few city governments to say 'no' to the legislation locally. Bemidji and Ely, for example, both decided not to allow Sunday sales.

Duluth's City Council, on the other hand, did vote to allow Sunday sales, but an ordinance rule pushed the date by which liquor stores could be open back by a couple weeks. The reason for this is because there is a 30-day waiting period in place before ordinances can take effect. Being the vote happened on June 12, this meant that the earliest the ordinance would allow for Sunday sales would be this weekend (July 16).
