John Williams, Yes, That John Williams, Has Never Watched a Single ‘Star Wars’ Movie

John Williams, probably the most recognizable name of modern Hollywood film scores, has given us the iconic soundtracks to little indie pictures such as Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones, E.T., and, of course, Star Wars. The music is at once timeless and nostalgic, allowing us all to sink cozily back into the days when Amblin ruled our childhoods as we listen through each score over and over. All of us, that is, except John Williams.

Ladies, Gentlemen, and Friends: I Give You Chewbacca Singing ‘Silent Night’

It’s the Friday before Christmas. Those of us who aren’t currently concealing the fact that we’ve slumped over at our desks in a eggnog-hangover-induced nap have glued our eyes to the clock, counting down the minutes to a leisurely holiday break. Everyone just wants to get home, gather with family or other loved ones around a crackling fire, put on the musical stylings of Burl Ives or Bing Crosby, and have a nice mug of hot cocoa. Time slows to a crawl on the Friday before a long weekend, and we both know you’re not getting any work done today, so why not kick back with the soothing sounds of Chewbacca moaning out a classic Christmas standard?

Daisy Ridley Says ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Already Revealed Rey’s Parents

One of the biggest questions we were left with at the end of The Force Awakens, aside from “Do you think Luke makes his own organic soap out there on that space island?” was “Who the heck are Rey’s parents?” It’s a question that won’t be answered in the Star Wars universe until Episode VIII hits theaters late next year…unless you’re a real smarty-pants like Daisy Ridley.

Kathleen Kennedy Clarifies Her Comments on a Female ‘Star Wars’ Director

Earlier this week, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy made headlines when she suggested that the time was not quite right for a female Star Wars director. In our own write-up of her comments, we noted that the reasoning behind Kennedy’s comments was sound, if not a little depressing: there’s an added degree of pressure on any female director, and the last thing Kennedy wants to do is put someone in a situation where they cannot succeed. Still, with so many male filmmakers seemingly being thrust from anonymity to nine-figure productions, Kennedy’s comments also hinted at an institutional double-standard that is a source of frustration to so many.

‘Rogue One’ Director Gareth Edwards Reveals Some Monster-Sized Easter Eggs

Much like Marvel, the world of Star Wars is somewhat secretive, leaving fans with plenty of surprises to discover in theaters. Rogue One has been a little more transparent — and that makes sense, given that Gareth Edwards’ spinoff / prequel is the first of Lucasfilm’s new anthology series, the success of which will serve as something of a barometer for future spinoffs. We’ve learned quite a bit about Rogue One over the last year (and even more in the recent weeks leading up to its release), and with two weeks left to go, Edwards has one more interesting piece of intel to share with fans.

‘Rogue One’ Is Not Getting a Sequel Because That Would Be Silly

Look, pretty much every Star Wars fan with functioning brain cells knows that there won’t be a sequel to Rogue One, but there’s an unspoken (and kind of dumb) rule in any setting which involves people asking questions and receiving answers about movies: If it can be asked, someone will ask it, especially if it’s a question with a really obvious answer — like “will there be a sequel to Rogue One?”

Is That Grand Moff Tarkin in the New ‘Rogue One’ TV Spot?

The late actor Peter Cushing, mainstay of Hammer’s horror films and erstwhile Star Wars cast member, cut a distinctive figure: cheekbones that could slice diamond, perfectly coiffed shock of grey hair, mouth permanently pursed into a single flat line. As the ruthless Empire commander Grand Moff Tarkin, Cushing left a lasting impression on generations of viewers, austerity coded directly into the lines on his face. He makes for an instantly recognizable silhouette — so is that really him, out of focus and in the foreground for a split second in the latest Rogue One: A Star Wars Story TV spot?

‘Rogue One’ Composer Michael Giacchino Only Had Four Weeks to Write the Score

In the four decades that Star Wars has dominated pop culture, we’ve never had to hear a soundtrack for a live-action movie that wasn’t written by John Williams. Williams wrote the original trilogy, and then the follow-up prequels, and even dove back in for the soundtrack for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. So the fact that Williams did not write the music for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is just one of many ways in which Rogue One represents a departure from the main story. No Star Wars crawl, no John Williams, no problem? I guess we’ll see.
