Waterspouts are generally a warm-season phenomenon, appearing over large bodies of water like Lake Superior. Saturday afternoon (December 7), multiple cold air waterspouts were spotted near Knife River, north of Duluth on the Minnesota North Shore.

The first major snow storm of the season packed a serious punch, with waves of snow through the first week of December leaving Twin Ports and Northland residents digging out. So, how much snow did we get?
While many places in the region have already seen between 1 and 2 feet of snow (see latest snowfall totals here), another heavy round is expected to hit today, leaving a final storm total of between 2 and 3 feet through much of the area before the snow clears out and frigidly cold conditions slide into the area.
A series of strong storms swept through the Twin Ports region yesterday, including an afternoon storm that brought gusty winds and small hail to Duluth around lunchtime. Later in the day, a severe thunderstorm about 70 miles west of Duluth touched down near Remer, and tracked southeast toward Hill City.

The heat and high humidity has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory effective from 11 am to 8 pm Tuesday for heat index values between 95 and 105 through the Twin Ports, and along the North and South Shores of Lake Superior.
