State Alpine ski meet is Wednesday at Giants Ridge.  State Cross-country meet is Thursday also at Giants Ridge; and in high school girl’s hockey Tuesday night in the Section 7A semifinals, the Mirage of Proctor-Hermantown beat Princeton 5-3 to advance to the section title game on Friday.

The other semifinal game featured Moose Lake Area and Hibbing-Chisholm.  The Bluejackets posted the 3-1 win to advance to the section final.  The title game will be in Cloquet as well on Friday night with the winner off to state.

Pitchers and Catchers report to work

Training camp has opened for the Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers.  Full squad workouts start later this week.  Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said, “Well it’s normal spring here, we have a lot of decisions to make with our starting pitching staff, that is our biggest concern.  We have a pretty good core line-up and offensively we should be fine, our defense should be fine.”

The Twins not only brought some new faces with them on the roster, they did as well on the coaching staff, changing things up following last season.

Ryan was excited to be back on the field, he said, “It’s good to be back in Florida, in the nice weather.  It’s one of those days where you look forward to, everyone is optimistic about what going on in the organization.”

Hoops time

In high school girls basketball the South Shore Cardinals are unbeaten on the year and ranked #4 in the state.

Emily Gustafson recently achieved her 1,000 point for South Shore and was honored at the game Tuesday night. She leads the state in scoring with 31 points per game.  Her sister Emily leads state in rebounding with 18 per game.

And in other hoops, thousands of dollars was raised Tuesday night as the Superior Spartans hosted Duluth East in a basketball double-header.  The game also severed as a cancer benefit for St. Luke’s Breast Cancer Center, with the help of Como Oil the night was a big hit.

Fans could bid on items and take part in other fundraising activities.

The Spartans had raised over $1,000 just on pre-sale t-shirt sales.

The Spartan girls team ranked 5th in the state in Wisconsin and won 82-50 over the Duluth East Greyhounds.  Junior Jessica Lindstrom scored 30 points and became the leading girls basketball scorer in school history.

The two schools also met in boy’s basketball with the Spartans also posting a 61-60 win.
