Tom’s Notes: Northland Curling Team Gets National Attention + More

A Northland curling team took their talents to the Big Apple Tuesday morning with an appearance on N–B–C’s TODAY SHOW!

Team Fenson appeared on the show as part of the Today Show’s Olympic Week and the start of the one year countdown to the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Team Fenson, whose members hail from the Twin Ports and the Iron Range, will be one of the U.S. teams that will be competing in November for a chance to head to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Shawn Rojeski and the rest of the team departed Duluth on Saturday and were excited for their visit to New York and said they would love another Olympic appearance with the Pete Fenson rink.  Rojeski said, “We’re getting ready.  We just came off of our best season so far so we’re ready for it.”

Olympic week will continue Wednesday on the Today Show and will end with Olympic champions and hopefuls ringing the closing bell on Wall Street.

Football Over

The San Francisco 49ers officially closed out their season Tuesday, by cleaning out their lockers. Final meetings and saying goodbye to friends.

But they are already thinking about next year.  Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said,

“The thing next for our team is some R and R. I think our players, our coaches have spent everything that they have at this point and, take a couple weeks to recharge the battery.”

He added, “Forever proud of the way our guys played. Somehow they found a way to overcome, and overcome again, and overcome. And that’s something that you can live with.”

Donte Whitener, 49ers Safety said, “We have five yards to be champions, and somehow we have to take it to the house, you’re five yards from your goal. So you get so close but so far. We understand that. We have a bunch of young guys here, a bunch of guys in their prime so hopefully we can keep everybody together and make another run at it.”

Frank Gore, 49ers Running Back added, “About like last year when we went to the NFC Championship and fell short. Came back this year and go to the Super Bowl and come up five yards short. Next year our goal is to get back in and try to win it.”

While they were cleaning out lockers, Baltimore had a much different experience.  They held their Super Bowl parade in Baltimore.

Fans of the Baltimore Ravens came out in force Tuesday to welcome the Super Bowl Champions home. The Ravens defeated the San Francisco Forty-Niners Sunday in Super Bowl 47.

Tuesday the players got to ride through Baltimore and salute the fans that supported them all year. An estimated two-hundred-thousand fans turned for the parade and program at the stadium.

Authorities had to turn people away from the stadium when the stands and the field became overcrowded with people.
