Almost everyone in Minnesota drives a car and auto thefts do happen. What's surprising is the make, model and year when it comes the most stolen vehicle in the land of 10,000 Lakes.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the 1997 Honda Accord was the most stolen vehicle last year with 50, 427 missing. Here are the top 5 most stolen nationally:

  1.  Honda Accord (50, 427)
  2.  Honda Civic (49, 547)
  3.  Ford F-150 Full Size (32, 721)
  4. Chevrolet Silverado 1500  (31, 238)
  5.  Toyota Camry (16, 732)

Now let's take a look at what gets stolen in Minnesota:

  1. 1997 Honda Accord
  2. 1998 Honda Civic
  3. 1999 Cheverolet Silverado
  4. 2001 Ford F-150
  5. 1999 Toyota Camry
  6. 2000 Honda CR-V
  7. 2005 Chevrolet Impala
  8. 2005 Dodge Caravan
  9. 2005 Toyota Corolla
  10. 2005 Chevrolet Malibu

Definitely not what I was expecting for Minnesota. Easiest way to prevent it, is keep your doors locked and always have your keys on you. I'm sure a lot of thefts happen during our winter months (which is almost 6 months long) when people are warming up their cars. Quick tip about starting you car in the winter, in Duluth it's against city ordinance.

I have never owned any of the listed vehicles, but I guess I never really thought about vehicle thieves going for specific cars. Let me know what you think of the results in the comments and remember to not leave your valuables in the car either.
