Winters here in the Northland can be brutal. We started this season kind of mild but now we are in full winter cold. If you are traveling (hopefully to take a vacation) you may want to include a winter survival kit.

When you put together a winter survival/winter emergency kit, don't keep it in your trunk. If you get stranded, you may not be able to get back there to get it. Keep it under a seat in the back or passenger seat. You may want to include some pet food and water for your pet (if you have one). Also some booties for their feet if you need to go for a long distance for safety.

Here's the short list of things from the Ready Wisconsin Website:

  • Shovel
  • Windshield scraper and small broom
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Battery powered radio
  • Water
  • Snack food including energy bars
  • Raisins and mini candy bars
  • Matches and small candles
  • Extra hats, socks and mittens
  • First aid kit with pocket knife
  • Necessary medications
  • Blankets or sleeping bag
  • Tow chain or rope
  • Road salt, sand, or cat litter for traction
  • Booster/jumper cables
  • Emergency flares and reflectors
  • Fluorescent distress flag and whistle to attract attention
  • Cell phone adapter to plug into lighter

You may want to have a pillow, along with a quilt, and reading materials too. If you are taking a trip through hard weather, hand crank radio with a light and cell phone charger in case your car battery is dead would be helpful.

Download a PDF of things to prepare and maybe keep a copy in your car.
