Split Rock Lighthouse located South of Silver Bay is one of the most photographed spots in the state of Minnesota. With its breathtaking views of the mammoth cliffs and Lake Superior below it is no wonder that it is a major tourist attraction.

Split Rock Lighthouse was completed in 1910 and was a key player in guiding ships on Lake Superior away from the rocky shoreline.  For nearly 15 years after it was built the only access to the lighthouse was by boat, until the highway was completed in 1924. When the Coast Guard took over the Lighthouse Service in 1939, it publicized Split Rock Lighthouse as "probably the most visited lighthouse in the United States."

But with new technology on the horizon Split Rock Lighthouse eventually closed in 1969. Today there are only five staffed light stations in operation. All other lighthouses in the United States are either automated or decommissioned. In 1971 the State of Minnesota obtained the building and in 1976 the Minnesota Historical Society took over administrative duties which are still in place today.

Each year thousands of visitors come to see this Minnesota Icon which became a National Historic Landmark in 2011.
