Today we're jumping back to this week in 1997, we'll look at a memorable Jim Carrey movie, a NASA discovery and a very popular Spice Girls song.

In 1997 Jim Carrey was nominated for Best Performance by an actor in a comedy in his role in Liar Liar. The film was about a lawyer who couldn't lie for 24 hours due to his son's birthday wish. The film grossed over $300 million at the box office.

In news headlines an international team of University and NASA astronomers detected a flash of light from a distant galaxy. A sentinel that may definitively solve a 30 year old mystery in astrophysics by demonstrating that cosmic gamma ray bursts come from the distant reaches of the universe.

Spice Girls had their only number one hit in the U.S. this year with 'Wannabe'. It was also their debut song and went on to win the best single at the 1997 BRIT Awards.
