What Does The East Coast Think Of Minnesota’s Iconic Sammy’s Pizza?
I was scrolling through YouTube and I stumbled on a video where a guy from Massachusetts did a "one bite" pizza review. It was a frozen pizza from one of the oldest pizza places in Minnesota.
Sammy's Pizza has 15 locations in the region. World War II Vet Sammy Perralla founded the first one in Hibbing, Minnesota. Since then it's become a big pizza franchise stretching from the Iron Range all the way to Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Barstool Sports Reviews Sammy's Pizza
Dave Portnoy from Bar Stool Sports did a bunch of reviews of frozen pizza from across the country during the COVID-19 Quarantine in 2020. Remember when we were all stuck at home and eating junk food for months? It was the perfect time for Portnoy to bring us the content we needed: One Bite Pizza Reviews.

I know I'm a few years late to the game on this review, but I still thought it was worth sharing. I'm sure there are plenty of Sammy's lovers that haven't seen it.
I'll say that Portnoy is pretty honest in his reviews. He's had some backlash from other reviews of different pizzas, so at least you know you're getting his real opinion. His real opinion of Sammy's Pizza wasn't spectacular.
He loves the backstory, he loves the fact that a World War II vet came up with it. When it comes to the review, he points out that the bottom of the pizza was very pale. (That could just be how you're cooking it, bro.)
My other problem with Dave's review is the way he cuts the pizza. Who cuts an entire pizza into quarters? Is this an East Coast thing? Especially with Sammy's Pizza. They cut it up into bite-size squares so each bite can be savored.
Dave does what we all do and burns the roof of his mouth during the review. You can just never wait long enough to try a slice, right?
He gives Sammy's Pizza a 5.3 out of 10. As he describes it, it's very "middle of the road."
Comments on the video suggest that he needs to try it fresh in one of Sammy's locations. I've had Sammy's frozen pizzas before. I think they're delicious, but they still aren't quite as good as when they are fresh.
