Bomb Cyclone Possible For Minnesota + Wisconsin

This is a pretty intense term but no reason to panic! Being weather aware is always helpful, even if we want to avoid weather forecasts this time of the year because we don't need the negativity of snow and cold. Ha!

Now, things are cooling off a bit in Minnesota and Wisconsin and we are slowly transitioning into the fall season. I am ready for fall but not for what comes next!

It seems like our fall will be short lived because a weather analyst just shared that there's the possibility of a bomb cyclone next week and into the weekend. So what does that mean and how will that impact us?

What Is A Bomb Cyclone?

It sounds scary - and at times, it can be. We have had a few in Minnesota over the years, with the most recent being in 2024. According to AccuWeather, a bomb cyclone is described as is "a large storm that undergoes rapid strengthening over a 24-hour period" and most often over an ocean.

They can also happen in the midwest and have! A bomb cyclone usually brings very heavy rain or snow, along with windy conditions. It typically leads to severe weather and at times, unsafe conditions.

Weather Analyst Forecasts Possible Bomb Cyclone For Midwest

Winter might be coming in hot! Midwest Weather shared an outlook on Friday (October 10th) detailing a possible bomb cyclone for our neck of the woods. He does say not to panic and it's just a possibility right now. He also says it won't be severe if it does happen.

According to his outlook, we already have a strong system moving our way midweek and into the weekend. At the time of writing, models show the system "rapidly intensifying" and while it doesn't show bomb cyclone criteria right now, it could as we get closer to the system moving in.

It's always hard to tell what the weather will do, especially because we are by Lake Superior. Either way, winter is definitely upon us so enjoy 'fall' while we have it!
