I almost fell for it myself. I saw a post recently on Facebook, and I almost clicked the link. Sadly, many of my friends have and it could be causing some serious problems.

Scams are everywhere on Facebook, preying on innocent people.

There's been a lot of scams on social media. There are also a lot of people who pretend to be someone else. Have you ever heard of a sweetheart scam? That's when someone starts an online relationship with someone and preys on them. Eventually, they'll need money to come see them, or they'll be in financial trouble and need money wired to them. I seriously saw it yesterday a dozen times. So many people got tricked by it. But what happens if you click on it?

According to Malwaretips, the scam is trying to steal Facebook accounts by tricking people to click on malicious links. It's called phishing, and it's a big problem.

Your account can be compromised and allow scammers to get your personal information.

Scammers use your Facebook account to fool your friends.

You can be tagged by a friend who has been compromised. You would assume that a mutual friend has passed away, so you click on the link to find out who. Then your account is hacked, and your friends are tagged in a similar post that shows up on your newsfeed. It spreads like wildfire across the internet.

What do you do if you fall for the scam?

Take action quickly! Here's what Malwaretips says

1. Reset your Facebook password
2. Check your privacy settings - make it only available to friends, not public
3. Remove suspicious friends. Anyone you don't know? Delete!
4. Tell your friends that your account was hacked so they don't fall for it.
5. Keep a close eye on your Facebook account
6. Run antivirus software
7. If you used your Facebook password for other accounts, change those as well. You shouldn't use the same passwords on different sites in case there is a data leak or theft.
8. Contact Facebook, and report the links so Facebook can take them down.

Be very careful clicking on any links.

Scammers prey on your emotions. The panic of wondering who passed away can cloud your judgment and you can rush to click the link. Just take a moment and ask yourself if you should click the link or not. In a lot of cases, you're better of not.
