I think most people in Wisconsin and around the world are familiar with the work and personality of Bob Ross, the American painter, art instructor, and television host who, in the ’80s and ’90s, shared his love for painting and the environment with millions of viewers on the PBS show “The Joy of Painting.”

Ross was known for effortlessly demonstrating brushstrokes that developed into amazing landscapes. Of course, the line he became famous for was "happy little trees", which he would say when he painted one on his canvas.

Inspired by Bob Ross’ love of the outdoors, the “Happy Little Trees” program began in 2019 when the Michigan DNR, Bob Ross Inc., and hundreds of volunteers partnered to plant trees in locations across Michigan hard-hit by invasive pests and tree diseases.

Now, there's a Bob Ross-inspired virtual 5K that raises money to support tree-planting and forest-protection efforts in a total of 17 states, including Wisconsin. More than 10,000 participants joined the 2025 event, and registration is open now for this year's event.
