Tiny Minnesota Town Named ‘Hardest To Spell’ In The Whole State
It's no secret that Minnesota has some tough town names to spell. Even more, there's a lot that nobody knows how to pronounce. A list has been compiled of the hardest town names to spell across the entire United States.
24/7 Wallstreet put together the list of the 50 hardest-to-spell town names. They selected one name from each state using certain criteria.
Hardest Towns To Pronounce And Spell
24/7 Tempo looked at the U.S. Census Bureau's list of towns in the 2017 American Community Survey. Almost 30,000 town names were considered! They then basically had their editors pick the hardest ones to pronounce and spell.
I assumed that it would be a town with a Native American name. For example towns like Ah-gwah-ching or Biwabik. Nope, this town name actually comes from settlers who served in the Civil War.
Beaulieu, Minnesota - How Do You Say That?
The tiny township of Beaulieu, Minnesota was named the toughest to pronounce and spell in Minnesota. They have a population of only 37 people. Brothers Henry and John Beaulieu served in the Civil War, and after it was over they settled the small town.
You pronounce it "bohl-yuu." It's a french name, but some English pronounce it "BEW-lee." The town is only 3.9 square miles, so if you're traveling through don't blink or you'll miss it.
Beaulieu made the top 10 for the entire country.
I guess this is something to be proud of. Beaulieu was named number 8 on the list of the hardest names to pronounce.
Number one on the list went to Acequia, Idaho. You pronounce that one uh-Seek-we-uh. I never would have guessed.
