It's been a pretty mild winter so far in Duluth and Minnesota as a whole. We've only had a few brief snow showers without any real accumulation and at the time of writing, it hasn't really been cold aside from a day of two. It's not a normal winter by any means.

Eventually, something has to give and we know winter will strike at some point. I turned to the Old Farmer's Almanac to see what they are predicting for the month of January in Duluth. I say predict because not everyone believes in their methodology when it comes to giving a forecast.

If you believe in what they do, you can bet on winter finally arriving for the first month of the new year. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, it will be 'frigid' to start the year, with cold conditions through January fourth.

From there, we can expect snowy periods, along with 'bitter cold' temperatures in our region, which does include all of the Northland. About a third into the month, temperatures will warm up by just a bit and snow showers will continue consistently.

From the 19th through the 23rd, 'chilly' temperatures return along with very snowy periods. From the 24th through the end of the month, we will see snow showers lightening up to flurries with 'very cold' temperatures.

There you have it! It doesn't look like a massive storm is expected in January but the snow will start to pick up. It has been weird not having a ton of snow on the ground in the Northland. Not having snow for Christmas will also be a little weird, too!

It looks like we will also get our first really cold temperatures of the season as well, with our average temperature falling into the single digits. Soak up this unusual winter while we have it before things change!

The 15 Snowiest Winters On Record In Duluth History

Since the National Weather Service began keeping weather records in Duluth in the late 1800s, here are the 15 winters with the highest snowfall totals on historical record.

It is worth noting that the official records from 1941-today have been recorded at the area now known as the Duluth International Airport (away from the lake, on top of the hill). Before then, various locations closer to Lake Superior had been used for official weather recording data. For anyone that knows anything about how Lake Superior and the hill play a role in temperature and snow, you can see how this makes older records inherently different.

While these records note the "snowiest winters", they actually include all seasonal snowfall from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.
