The Superior School District Administrator sent an e-mail to parents informing them about changes coming to the district. Dr. Amy Starzecki sent the e-mail on Monday night, following Superior's special school board meeting.

The Superior School District has been at 71% capacity in their schools. The Superior Telegram reported months ago that the school district is facing a 4 million dollar budget shortfall for the 2024-2025 year. Dr. Starzecki shared statistics that show enrollment has dropped by 300 students. The amount of kindergartners entering school has also decreased.

Officials started looking into the budget shortfall and looked at possible solutions. A decision was made to look at consolidating the six elementary schools into five.

A committee involving parents, teachers, and community members was formed to consult the school board on their direction. An e-mail was sent to the student's family members on Monday night informing them of the decision.

Dr. Amy Starzecki thanks everyone from the advisory committee, concerned community members, faculty, and others for their input. The meeting on Monday was well attended by community members.

The District Administrator shared the information that Lake Superior Elementary would be shutting its doors following the 2023-2024 school year.

Dr. Starzecki cites that the funding issues come from decreased enrollment, a cap on per pupil state funds, inflation, and the need to offer competitive wages to staff to fill positions.

The School Board will work on redefining school boundaries for elementary schools and appreciates the feedback from community members.
