One American state is now requiring residents to prove their age in order to access and watch graphic adult content.

Residents of Louisiana will now have to provide their government-issued ID to watch adult entertainment online.

Republican state representative Laurie Schlegel passed the law, HB142, in June 2022.

The legislation requires age verification for any website that features "33.3 percent or more" pornographic material, although it is unclear how the state will monitor what websites contain as much.

The law officially went into effect Jan. 1, 2023.

According to FOX 8 New Orleans, Louisiana residents will need to set up an account with LA Wallet or AllPassTrust to upload their driver's license or government-issued ID to either create or sign into an already existing account.

Other methods to verify a resident's age will be made available for those who may be unable to access either web portal.

Some supporters of the new law believe the verification process is similar to the new norm set by gambling websites that use similar age verification protocols.

However, others argue that companies might be able to illegally retain private information such as users' addresses and birth dates, among other sensitive and private details.

Others note that VPNs might be used to get around the age verification wall for adult entertainment websites.

It is unclear how this new law will navigate broader social media websites that may also feature graphic content, such as Twitter and Reddit.
