Falcon Height, MN (MinnesotaNow)- A motorcyclist lost his life in a crash near the Minnesota State Fair.

That’s according to the State Patrol, which responded to the crash shortly before 10:30 Thursday night. 

An SUV was also involved in the fatal collision. Two people were riding on the motorcycle.

32-Year-Old Killed, 25-Year-Old Hurt in Crash Near Minnesota State Fairgrounds Involving SUV & Motorcycle

The deadly crash occurred at the intersection of Hwy. 51/Snelling Ave. and Garden Ave., which is just north of the fairgrounds in Falcon Heights.

The motorcycle was heading north on Snelling Ave. and the SUV was making a left turn from southbound Snelling Ave. to eastbound Garden Ave. when the vehicles collided, the state crash report says.

32-year-old Samuel Kelly Lewer of Coon Rapids was driving the motorcycle. The State Patrol says he was pronounced dead at the scene.

25-year-old Katie Jo Renelt was identified as the motorcycle passenger. The young Scandia, MN woman was brought to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the State Patrol.

The driver of the SUV was not hurt. The State Patrol identified her as 28-year-old Jessie Elizabeth Carlson of Roseville. 

Lewer and Renelt were not wearing helmets and it’s unknown if alcohol was involved in the deadly collision, the state crash report says. Carlson was buckled up.

Update: Story has been changed to include name of motorcyclist killed. The State Patrol listed a different name in the previous version of the crash report.

The 2025 Minnesota State Fair runs from Thursday, August 21, through Labor Day, Monday, September 1. While it promises to be a week filled with fun, great food, and entertainment, and more, it's important to know what items people will not be allowed to bring into the fairgrounds.

Below is a list of items that will not be allowed into any part of the fairgrounds, as well as additional items that, while they may allowed into the fairground, they are forbidden in the Grandstand for the concerts and events.
