A salmonella-based recall of a brand of onions has affected all 50 states across the country.  Minnesota and Wisconsin are included on the list of states with affected cases - as are Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

The Food and Drug Administration is alerting customers that California-based Thompson International is voluntarily recalling their Red, Yellow, White, and Sweet Yellow Onions; the affected onions were shipped from their warehouse from May 1, 2020 to the present date.  The onions were distributed to wholesalers, restaurants, and retail stores in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and Canada.  As of this writing, 396 total illnesses have been reported - including 50 hospitalizations; 34 states are included on the list of states with affected illnesses or hospitalizations - including Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The concern is salmonella. While Thompson International onions haven't been directly-linked to the outbreak, the company is voluntarily recalling their product out of an abundance of caution.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, salmonella can cause serious medical symptoms:

"[Salmonella is] an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis."

For identification purposes, the FDA provides the following information:

"The onions were distributed in 5 lbs. carton. 10 lbs. carton. 25 lbs. carton. 40 lbs. carton, 50 lbs. carton. bulk, 2 lb. mesh sacks, and 3 lb. mesh sacks, 5 lb. mesh sacks, 10 lb. mesh sacks 25 lbs. mesh sacks, 50 lbs. mesh sacks under the brand names Thomson Premium, TLC Thomson International, Tender Loving Care, El Competitor, Hartley’s Best, Onions 52, Majestic, Imperial Fresh, Kroger, Utah Onions and Food Lion."

What do you do if you believe you have Red, Yellow, White, and Sweet Yellow Onions from these brands?  First - don't consume them and immediately discard the product.  Any questions in relation to the onions or the recall should be directed to Thompson Internationals Kim Earnshaw:  661-845-1111.
