Many know Wisconsin Point as a destination for fun - whether it's swimming, hiking, or exploring.  But the popular geographic area also has historic significance to many - especially to the Ojibwe.  Now, officials with the City of Superior are looking to do something about it.

According to news sources, a partnership between the city and the Wisconsin Historical Society aim to have a part of Wisconsin Point deemed a National Historic Site.  Many steps of the process remain before a final determination can be made, but officials close to the project are optimistic.  According to Superior Parks Recreation and Forestry Director Linda Cadotte:

Roughly in the summer sometime, it will be sent to the review board.   After that, it would go to the National Park Service for review.....it could be mid- to late 2020 before a determination is made.

Wisconsin Point is noted for being an early settling campsite for the Ojibwe people - along with serving as a burial site.  In 1918, many of the remains were removed and moved to a different cemetery in Superior.
