People all over the world are under self quarantine trying to stay healthy amid other family members or co-workers for those who do not have the ability to work from home. What kind of effect is this having on our pets? I would guess for myself and my friends that they are happy to have more times with their humans, and for us we can get the comfort from them during these trying times.

According to Review.com "There are healthy habits that the CDC recommends upholding in everyday life with a pet, including washing your hands after handling them, to ensure the health of you and your pet, particularly as the coronavirus escalates. If you become sick (with confirmed coronavirus or otherwise), the CDC recommends restricting your contact with your pets, the same as you would with humans. Even though there is currently no evidence that COVID-19 affects animals, it’s certainly possible a connection may be discovered as more research is done."

So what are some recommendations to ensure your pet will be taken care of?

  1. Have 2 weeks worth of food and treats on hand. Many pets get used to a certain type of food and if you have to change up their diet suddenly they may become sick. (Vomiting and diarrhea are the most common side effects.
  2. Keep Your Pets Plenty of Attention. I know all about needy pets. One of my dogs and 1 of the cats constantly wants to climb on me, get belly rubs, pet them. I get it and am glad to do it, but can be hard and very distracting when you are trying to work. We all know what are pets favorite things are to do, so try to set up a time each day to do whatever activity or toy they like to play with, you will both be happier at the end of the day.
  3. Make time to entertain your pet and yourself. Our pets can be awfully silly sometimes and this is a great way to break up the monotony of the day or to take your mind off of things. If weather permits get outside in the fresh air it will make you feel invigorated.
