With colder weather arriving, the road construction season is starting to draw to a close. That means we should be seeing a reopening of the closed Downtown Duluth streets that have been subject to work since this summer, right?

According to an update from the organization Downtown Duluth, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for these street closures.

In the update from Downtown Duluth, there are two different anticipated dates to look forward to in the timeline to restore a more normal flow of traffic in the downtown area.

The first of those two reopenings is the stretch of roadway along Third Street. This closure, which has also impacted traffic on Lake Avenue and elsewhere along Third Street, is wrapping up. In the update from Downtown Duluth, they share that the Lake Avenue intersection and stretch of Third Street from First Avenue East to Lake Avenue and the 6th Avenue East intersections are expected to reopen by the end of the day on Monday, October 16.

The other closure, however, will remain in effect for a while longer.

The First Avenue East closure is expected to reopen in a few weeks, as long as weather cooperates. Downtown Duluth says that steam and hot water utility work is nearing completion, with plans to restart that system on Monday, October 16. That doesn't mean the road will reopen that day, however.

With underground work nearing completion, surface work on curb and gutter as well as the street surface will need to be completed before the road can reopen. This reopening of First Avenue East is anticipated to happen in mid-November.
