Just one day after the announcement of the latest iPhone, Apple has announced the death of the company's co-founder, Steve Jobs. Jobs has been a major figure in the tech industry, re-shaping the world and how technology is part of it. Along with introducing the Apple computer, he was the driving force behind incredibly popular products including the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

Along with being heavily involved in the transformation of the tech industry, Jobs was also very involved in the entertainment industry not only through working toward the creation of iTunes; but also with deep financial and other involvement in Pixar Studios, creators of many popular movies.

Jobs has dealt with health issues over the past few years, leading to his resignation from the company in August. In his resignation, Jobs made the following comment:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

Following that announcement, news has been quiet about Jobs' health - up until today. At 7:00 pm central time, Apple officially posted an image on their website showing Jobs with text simply saying "Steve Jobs 1955-2011."

The announcement from Apple had the following to say about Steve's passing:

Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives," Apple said in a statement. "The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

Along with this statement, Apple's website has a page dedicated to Jobs, saying:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could ha he built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

On this page, Apple also has created an email address for people to share memories about Jobs: rememberingsteve@apple.com.

A separate statement from his family said the following:

[Jobs] died peacefully today surrounded by his family...We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.
