Some exciting news in the competitive fishing world, as a national fishing championship is coming to a popular Northern Minnesota lake for the first time ever.

The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) announced it will be bringing one of its championship events to Leech Lake in Northern Minnesota for the first time ever.

The 2026 Strike King Bassmaster College Championship will zero in on Walker, Minnesota, this summer, welcoming college anglers from around the country to come to Leech Lake to compete for a national title.

This will mark the first time this event has ever been hosted on Leech Lake, a popular fishery for a large variety of species, most notably walleye, but also including bass.

The 2026 Bassmaster College Tournament Series includes tournament events on the Kissimmee Chain in FL, Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Brookeland, TX, Robert S. Kerr Reservoir in Sallisaw, OK, Lake Okeechobee in Okeechobee, FL, Santee Lake in Summerton, SC, and the James River in Henrico, VA.

In August, competitors head north to be challenged by the northern waters of Leech Lake. Tournament organizers highlight that by this time, water temperatures and vegetation tend to be at peak levels, with the expansive 112,000+ acres of water and 195 miles of shoreline.

The 2026 Strike King Bassmaster College Championship is scheduled for Thursday, August 20, through Saturday, August 22, 2026.

The Leech Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is heavily involved with hosting this year's event. In announcing the news, the organization said they "couldn’t be more excited to welcome collegiate anglers, teams, family and fans from across the country."

With a national spotlight being pointed at the Walker area for this event, it's easy to see why. Especially, the event will showcase the diversity of the lake that is most known for walleye fishing or its once-popular Eelpout Festival that hasn't happened in recent years.
