The #3 seed Duluth East Greyhounds upset #2 Edina 4-2 on Friday evening in the semifinals to advance to the Class AA State Championship. This marks the ninth time Duluth East has earned a trip to the state championship game, and is their first time back since 2015.

Edina's Evan Shoemaker opened scoring midway through the first period, but Duluth East's Garrett Worth tied the game up just over a minute later. Worth had his hand in a second score in the opening period for the Greyhounds on the assist for goal scorer Ian Mageau.

After a scoreless second period, Frederick Hunter Paine extended East's lead to 3-1 midway through the third period. Mason Nevers brought the Hornets to back within 1 goal at the 10:46 mark in the third, but Garrett Worth found the net for a second time on an empty netter at 15:43 to seal the deal for the Greyhounds.

Duluth East now heads to the 2018 Class AA State Championship, which is their first time back to the title game since 2015 when they lost 4-1 to Lakeville North. The Greyhounds will look to win their fourth boys hockey championship, and first since 1998. They await the winner of the last semifinal of the night between #1 Minnetonka and #5 Centennial. The championship game is at 7 pm Saturday night at the Xcel Energy Center.
