They do their job so well that it's easy to take them for granted - but we shouldn't.  The Duluth Fire Department works diligently to protect and serve the Northland no matter what time of day, what kind of weather,  and what kind of situation.  And they do that job 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and all year long.

With the closing of the year and the usual reviews that go with it, officials with the Duluth Fire Department are reporting that 2021 was a record year for them in many ways.

The final reviews that come with their annual report to the city and the community aren't due for a few weeks.  Ahead of that reporting, the Duluth Fire Department shared that their total service calls for 2021 reached record levels.  From January 1 to December 31 of 2021, the department responded to 14,847 service calls.  That number represents an increase of about 7% from the year before - an increase of 994 service calls in total for the department.

Those calls for service came from a variety of different sources and responded to many different categories.  And - as the diligent public service officers they are, they did it proudly.  As their social media post about the record number of calls for 2021 says:

"From structure fires, to medical calls, to water emergencies, and more we are proud to serve our community, and proud to have your support."

Here is the news as shared on the Duluth Fire Department's Facebook page:

The Duluth Fire Department is comprised of eight stations located as far east as Lester Park and as far west as Gary-New Duluth.  In addition to their official duties, the fire department member are also very active in community outreach programs that aim to provide for the safety and education of our area.
