Duluth, Superior Area Face Near-Critical Fire Weather Conditions Saturday
The National Weather Service issued a warning late Friday afternoon that impacts much of the Northland, who will need to be proactive if they had outdoor plans.
It appears the nice, dry weather we've had all week, combined with Saturday's forecast has led to a potentially dangerous situation into Mother's Day weekend as there is a threat of fires developing.
The warning was issued through the US National Weather Service Duluth Minnesota Facebook page:
Gusty southeast winds and very dry air will combine to support near-critical fire weather conditions Saturday, particularly across north-central Minnesota, where the winds will be strongest. Any fires that start will spread quickly in these conditions! Be sure to check with your local authorities for any burning restrictions. If you spot an out-of-control fire, be sure to report it to local authorities!
It's crucial for anyone who had outdoor plans Saturday to be aware of conditions and to monitor not only the fire danger warnings, but also if what burning permits might be required at their location.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has a handy page which features a state map to indicate which parts of the state face a fire danger and are under related burning restrictions.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also has a handy, interactive page that provides the same information. As of Friday evening, Douglas county was shown to have a "Very High" risk of fire.
While the forecast Saturday will make for challenging fire conditions, the extended forecast should provide some relief. According to the latest forecast from our media partners at WDIO-TV, precipitation is on the way:
Cloudy early with showers for the afternoon hours. High 55F. Winds SE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 40%,
Cloudy with occasional showers. Low 47F. Winds ESE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 50%.
Thunderstorms likely in the morning. Then a chance of scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Potential for severe thunderstorms. High 61F. Winds SE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 60%.
