Why Minnesota’s Fall Colors Might Be Different Than Usual This Year

Fall is quickly arriving, and fans of the season are getting ready to embrace all things autumn.

One of the popular seasonal things in Minnesota is checking out the awesome fall colors that pop up around much of the state from late September through much of October most years.

This year, some factors are working against fall foliage fans that could have noticeable impacts on your leaf peeping.

The first factor is the ongoing drought conditions being seen across much of Minnesota. The areas best known around the state for trees and fall colors are also suffering from drought conditions ranging from moderate to severe that have been in place through much of the growing season.

While the Minnesota DNR says mild drought conditions can actually enhance fall colors, more severe drought conditions lead to considerably duller leaves. That's more the direction we've been leaning across many prime fall colors locations around Minnesota.

The lack of consistent water leads to less vibrant colors and earlier leaf die-off. So, besides less bold colors, the normal timeframe of fall colors can be impacted.

• Northern Minnesota: Late September to early October
• Central Minnesota & Twin Cities Area: Mid-October
• Southern Minnesota: Mid-to-late October

Furthermore, the amount of time the leaves stay on the trees before falling off can be shorter during drought conditions, so the show can be shorter than in non-drought years.

As a matter of fact, I've already seen a number of trees starting to turn and lose leaves through the middle of August.

The good news is that there has been some recent scattered rain that has helped a little in parts of the state, but drought conditions do still remain across much of Minnesota.

Another factor that impacts fall colors is temperatures during the month of September.

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center is pointing toward a warmer-than-normal September across Minnesota. If that forecast holds true, it could further negatively impact the fall colors across the state.

Ideal conditions in September for the best possible fall colors are sunny days with cool nights, getting down between 32 and 45 degrees. If we see a consistently warm September, that will further work against the hopes of leaf peepers for this fall.

While we have some considerable factors working against us for a vibrant fall show this year, all hope is not lost, however.

The positive spin on Minnesota's 2026 fall colors outlook

If you're reading all of this and thinking there just won't be any pretty fall colors, all hope is not lost.

While factors point to a potentially less vibrant and possibly shorter show, the leaves are going to turn, and barring a poorly timed major wind storm and/or some other wild factors, we'll still get to enjoy the colors we get - even if the display is a little more brief.

Even in 2021, when we had a particularly dry summer and warm fall, we still got a decent show. Fall colors developed a little later than usual, but I still got some great photos in places I enjoy soaking in the fall scenery. Here's an example.

While there were more downed, dead leaves than usual, the remaining colors were still pretty enjoyable, even though they were a little later to develop than usual.

While some people might be frustrated by the variables because it makes it harder to plan a well-timed fall trip, I embrace all of the variables. It means that no two falls are exactly the same, and I'm okay with that! I mean, we can't control it, so why not just make the most of whatever we get?
