Our news partners at WDIO are reporting that former Superior Mayor Bruce Hagen has passed away. WDIO reports that a family member shared the news that Hagen passed away Thursday night.

Hagen announced his resignation as Superior's mayor in 2016, citing health reasons and "that the stress of decades in public service has caught up with him". He officially stepped down in the spring of 2017. It was later shared that he had been diagnosed with a terminal illness. The Duluth News Tribune reported that Hagen, who had dealt with other health issues, was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Hagen had been living in Florida at the time of his passing.

Hagen was deeply involved in politics, serving as Superior's mayor for two stints, serving from 1975 to 1987 and again winning mayoral elections in 2011 and 2015. He also served in Governor Thompson's administration as Chief of Staff in 1987 and in a handful of department roles in the 1990s and 2000s.
