Full Closure Of I-35 In Duluth Scheduled As Part Of Pedestrian Bridge Project

The next phase of the pedestrian bridge project over Interstate 35 in Duluth will lead to a full overnight closure of the freeway next week.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation provided an update today (August 12) that crews will be installing beams for the replacement of the pedestrian bridge just south of Downtown Duluth next Monday night

This beam installation will require a full closure of I-35 in both directions in the area of the project near where I-35 and Mesaba Avenue meet.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 10 pm on Monday, August 17, and MNDOT says the closure will last until 5 am on Tuesday, August 18, with traffic in both directions being rerouted during this time.

During this overnight closure, traffic will be detoured onto I-535 to Garfield Avenue, to Railroad Street to 5th Avenue West. Here's a map of the detour:

There will continue to be changing traffic impacts around the area of this project until it is completed in mid-October this fall. Detours of vehicle traffic as well as pedestrian and bicycle traffic will shift until the project is finished.

Some of those vehicle traffic impacts through the rest of this project include West Superior Street under Mesaba Avenue (MN 194) being closed from mid-August through mid-October. A detour via West 1st Street to Mesaba Avenue will be in place.
